What I love most about teaching is making learning happen everyday! It is a beautiful thing, and yet it is not as easy as opening a textbook and assigning a set of problems every day. We need to look beyond the old " sage on the stage" methodologies. For me, the innovation in my teaching has thrived on the interchange of ideas shared between old and new friends and family members in the educational profession. “Chance favors the connected mind.” ~Stephen Johnson, Where Good Ideas Come From: the Natural History of Innovation. Several serendipitous associations have made my 27-year career an adventurous one, from earlier years in New Jersey to more recent ones in New Mexico. I currently teach at the Turquoise Trail Charter School in Santa Fe, NM with my prized colleague, Sharyn Gray. I have a supportive principal who encouraged me to apply for the National Museum of Mathematics' Rosenthal Prize for Innovation in Math Teaching, for which I was a runner-up in 2016. Above all, I am super grateful to the students who keep this work inspired throughout the year!
