The use of models to promote algebraic thinking is a research-based approach to help all students, including students with learning disabilities, understand how to solve equations and inequalities, particularly when compared to traditional practices of memorizing procedures and steps to solve algebraic equations.
In this session, you'll learn about three models you can use with your students. The balance model is useful when multiple objects are being grouped and compared. The number line and arrow model are useful when a single unknown is changed. You'll then explore how to effectively implement the models to promote significant growth in algebraic thinking for students with learning disabilities. The mathematical concepts in this model are introduced as early as second grade and continue to develop into high school algebra.
