"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for."  - Georgia O'Keeffe

"The widespread lack of appreciation of the visual nature of mathematics relates to the misconceptions that exist about the nature of mathematics. . . Visual mathematics is an important part of mathematics for its own sake and new brain research tells us that visual mathematics even helps students learn numerical mathematics.
" - Jo Boaler

Spend your afternoon at MidSchoolMath exploring the connections between mathematics, art and nature at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.

During a short museum tour, you'll have an opportunity to view some of O'Keeffe's iconic and original contributions to the American Modernism movement: distinct flowers, dramatic cityscapes, glowing landscapes, and images of bones against the stark desert sky.

Then, spend the second part of the session in a hands-on workshop, where you can explore ways to blend art and mathematics or play with patterns, creating a sample lesson for your students or simply planning how to use more visual representations of mathematics or art in your classroom.

Important Notes for Attendees: This is a two-part double session.  You'll head directly to the museum after your lunch break and then return to the Convention Center for the 3:15 snack break, followed by Jo Boaler's keynote. If adding this session to your schedule, please do not add a 2:30 pm session to your schedule. Because of limited space and high demand, we ask that attendees attend both parts of this session.

The session will be held at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Education Annex, located a short 3-5 minute walk from the Convention Center. Please be preapred to walk this short distance. A map and detailed directions will be provided to all session attendees via email in advance.

Interested in visiting the O'Keeffe Museum but not sure if this session is for you? Discounted museum admission will be offered to MidSchoolMath attendees on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon! Details will be provided in your attendee packet.
