Looking for an engaging hands-on lesson that promotes conceptual understanding and covers standards-based content? Come experience the STEM Toy Zip Line Challenge!

This lesson addresses a range of math concepts within a meaningful context for middle school students, when students are asked to become research developers who must design a unique, new toy made of recyclable material that will travel down a zip line! Each group then competes to create the fastest zip line toy. You'll get to experience the lesson for yourself, in a hands-on format, and look for opportunities for learning and teaching about a range of mathematical concepts including slope, geometry, ratio and proportions, timing, measurement and more! You'll leave with an understanding of how to implement this lesson in your classroom, plus handouts and ideas for differentiation and extension.
