Same or Different: Introducing and Connecting Strategies by Keeping it Simple

Log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Limited Capacity seats available

The "Same or Different" discourse prompt, brought to prominence by Brian Bushart, has gained popularity as a means for primary and elementary students to explore visual models of foundational concepts. In this prompt, two similar images are presented and students are asked simply, "What is the same?" and "What is different?"
This session moves the structure into math strategies as students make connections between two presented methods and guides teachers to the process of designing their own. You'll be introduced to the "Same or Different" prompt, using the NCTM's 5 Practices for Orchestrating Mathematical Discourse; see and explore sample prompts; and learn how model the design process using common presentation tools and paper/markers to demonstrate the ease at which a prompt can be created. You'll conclude the session by creating your own prompt for use in an upcoming lesson!
